Designing your tailor made private tour
The Maltese Islands have so much to offer the visitor and even though our
islands are small, it impossible to see everything during a short visit.
Your private tour may be a general tour of some of the many highlights, a
special interest such as archaeology, churches, palaces, gardens and so on.
To assist you in creating your ideal private tour you may wish to look at
our 'Classical Malta Highlights' itinerary below.
The Classical Malta Highlights is the most popular private tour choice. The full itinerary requires
7 to 8 hours, however a 4 or 6 hour version is also available.
Classical Malta Highlights
Valletta
Start off with a drive around the capital's impressive
fortifications and bastions. The upper part of Valletta is also best seen
on foot, it is the ideal way to appreciate a sample of the capital. Your
walking tour will feature some the cities main attractions, including:
St. John's Co. Cathedral, Valletta
Formerly the Church of the Order of St. John is historically and
artistically one of the most historical monuments on the island. It was
built between 1573 and 1577 to the design of Girolamo Cassar (1520-1586),
chief engineer of the Order. The “Beheading of St. John”, Caravaggio’s
masterpiece, hangs on the Oratory.
Grand
Master's Palace, Valletta
The
Magisterial Palace, built between 1571 and 1574, is today the president's
office and seat to Malta's parliament. The palace is a treasure trove of
art. The Tapestry Chamber hangs a unique collection of Gobelin tapestries.
Frescoes depicting the Great Siege of 1565 adorn the hall of St. Micheal
and St. George - formerly the Order's Supreme Council Hall. And, the
beautiful ceiling decorations are by Nicolo Nasini. You will also find
works by Ribera, Vanloo and Batoni in the State Apartments. Entrance is
not always possible.
Mdina (The Silent City) & Rabat
This fascinating walled
city is a maze of narrow alleys and medieval delights. A walking tour
around Mdina is definitely a must for every visitor. The following
attractions are also worth visiting:
St. Paul's Cathedral, Mdina
The Xl Century Siculo-Norman
Cathedral was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693. The present Cathedral
was built by Lorenzo Gafa four years later and is believed to stand on the
site originally occupied by the house of Publius, the Roman Governor at
the time of St. Paul’s stay on the Island (AD60), who eventually became
the first Bishop of Malta.
Hypogeum
A UNESCO World Heritage site. This unique and ancient
underground monument, is 12 metres below street level. It consists of a network
of passages, chambers and caves cut on three levels, similar to the interior of
a megalithic temple. More than 7000 skeletal remains have been discovered at the
Hypogeum. Entrance is restricted, only 10 people every hour are permitted in,
therefore coach groups cannot visit.
Entry in to UNESCO'S Hypogeum is strictly by appointment only. Therefore
we can include this unique site on a pre-booked tour ONLY. Do not miss the opportunity!
Hagar Qim & Mnajdra
Situated on the southern
coast of the island, these temples are among
the most imposing megalithic structures in Malta. Dating back 3000 years BC,
some of the stones are 4 metres high and weigh a staggering 20 tons.
Marsaxlokk
This quaint fishing village on the southern coast of the island is an
ideal choice for a break or lunch stop. The seafront is lined with
restaurants and cafeterias, a small local market and the colourful
fishing boats, the traditional 'luzzu' dominate the pretty bay.
West Coast & Dingli Cliffs
This drive offers one of the most stunning panoramic views. The
Mediterranean appears as a vast expanse with the islet Filfla (the
smallest of the Maltese islands) lost out on its own. We normally take
this route from Mdina & Rabat to the south of the island or visa versa.
