The catamaran
departs Malta at approximately *0700hrs for the 90 minute crossing to the
beautiful island of Sicily.
On arrival at Pozzallo - a
typical Sicilian fishing village, we are met by our local guide and
air-conditioned luxury coaches.
Our excursion starts by crossing two of Europes highest bridges in the
south east of the island and then onto the Iblei
Mountain Range before reaching Europe's most active volcano, Mount Etna.
Mount Etna. The
drive up the mountain slopes takes us through picturesque villages and an
ever changing landscape.
The lower slopes of the volcano are extremely fertile with groves of
oranges, lemons and other Mediterranean flora and of course vines which
produce Sicily's best wines. We go through forests of chestnut trees which
gradually give way to oak, beech, birch and pine. During our tour of Mount
Etna we visit the Sylvester Craters. Our stop here gives
you the time to have lunch (not included in the price) at one of the
mountain restaurants and some souvenir
shopping.
Taormina. From Mount Etna our excursion then
takes us to the beautiful town of Taormina where we have free time to enjoy the unique
panoramic views overlooking Giardini Naxos, a former
Greek
colony, now an international yachting centre.
This peaceful panoramic town,
2006m above sea level was colonized by the Greeks. The main street, the
elegant Corso Umberto, with its cafes, restaurants and boutiques is a
bustle of nationalities.
We depart
at approximately 1800hrs from Taormina, our journey is straight to
Pozzallo for our departure back to Malta. On arrival in Malta, your
transport will be waiting to return you back to your hotel.
Summer Excursion - May to October includes Pozzallo, M Etna,
Taormina
Winter Excursion - November to April includes Pozzallo, M Etna, Modica
(see below)
Modica - featured on the winter
excursion
From Mount Etna, instead of going to Taormina as on the summer excursion,
we visit the Baroque city of Modica to
enjoy some time in the city centre and the popular "Il Corso".
Modica once so important
as to constitute a kingdom within the kingdom, is today a prosperous town
still dependent on its traditional agricultural economy. The beautiful
flight of steps leading to the main entrance and the statues representing
the twelve apostles are the main features of S. Pietro's church. The main
street or "Corso", with it's mixture of magnificent buildings,
modern shops and al fresco cafes. It is a
thriving town centre.
